The research field is that of technical textiles for architecture which, in the prevailing applications, have a soft, flexible consistency, but that in recent developments they can assume, through innovative manufacturing processes, the consistency of a rigid element of coating. Textile membranes can become tensioned surfaces, thin transparent and lightweight sheets, reinforcing elements for cement-based composite materials, and can ultimately serve as a rigid core of multi-layered panels.
Within the so-called "advanced materials" - i.e. ceramic, metallic and polymeric materials designed and customized by modification of their physical and chemical structure - the technical textile is a particularly dynamic research field, both in basic and applied research, and at different operating levels. In this ever-evolving scenario, the structuring of the already available technical information and the provision of a targeted endowment of specialist knowledge is required.
The final goal of the work consisted in the organization of a system of requirements and indicators that could support the designer in developing qualitative and quantitative considerations on membranes throughout the design process. This information, organized in a hypertext form (which can be consulted on the website www.architecturatessile.polimi.it) is intended at the designer's service to guide him in choosing the most suitable construction solution in relation to specific material conditions (material information) and in relation to the application possibilities (information on the material in use).
Information had been organized in three main groups, allowing a certain degree of autonomy for the designer.
The complexity of the project, which can correspond to different groupings of information, is: 1. designing architectures with membrane components in catalogue; 2. designing architecture with ad hoc membrane components; 3. designing architecture with ad hoc membranes. Wider is the field of information the designer decides to have access to and greater should be the chances of triggering process and product innovations.
Among other results, the research led to the organization of the International Conference Ephemeral Architecture: time and textiles and the Tensinet Symposium 2007 at Politecnico di Milano in April 2007.
